PATIENT
PATIENT A Pilot Study
Patients with chronic conditions are increasingly expected to participate meaningfully in research, yet traditional models position them as passive subjects rather than active partners. There is no established framework for understanding or measuring patient agency in research contexts.
Guiding Questions
Research Questions
- 1
Examine how individual differences in heart health literacy influence participants’ perceived agency toward engaging in cardiovascular research.
- 2
Understand how learning experiences in a national Masterclass influence patients’ perceptions of their agency for research engagement.
- 3
Explore how perceived agency contributes to long-term engagement and research efficacy.
- 4
Assess how patients’ sense of agency informs their communication and relationship with researchers in cardiovascular studies.
Approach
Methods Overview
This study employed a qualitative design to explore how patient partners perceive and enact agency in cardiovascular research. Participants were recruited from a national Masterclass, which aimed to build health literacy and research capacity among individuals with lived experience.
